How to prioritize target accounts

Score each account on fit, need and timing. Fit says the company matches your buyer, need says it has the problem now, and timing says something just changed. Work the accounts that score high on all three.

Key takeaways

  • HubSpot scores companies on fit, engagement or both, from properties such as company size and annual revenue (HubSpot).
  • Public companies list their biggest risks in Item 1A of the annual 10-K (SEC).
  • Most 8-K events, such as a new senior officer, are filed within four business days (Investor.gov).

What is account prioritization?

Account prioritization decides which accounts on your list get time this week, and in what order. It is not list building. The list says who matches your buyer, and the ranking says who to call first.

How do you score an account?

Give each account a score from 0 to 3 on each line, then add them up.

FactorWhat you checkWhere you find itWeight
FitIndustry, size, location and stack match your best customersYour CRM and the company site1x
NeedA public sign of the problem you solve, in the company's own wordsJob posts, filings and buyer posts2x

How do you build a target account list for a new outbound motion?

  1. Pull your 10 to 20 best customers and write down what they share.
  2. List every company that matches that fit, without ranking it yet.
  3. Add a need column: the public signal your best customers showed before they bought.
  4. Score the list with the table above, and sort by total.
  5. Keep the top 50 to 100 as your working list, and park the rest.

How do you prioritize 1,000 accounts with two SDRs?

  • Split the list into three tiers by score: the top 50, the next 200 and the rest.
  • Tier 1 gets a researched first message and a follow-up that adds a new fact.
  • Tier 2 gets a short message built on one public signal.
  • Tier 3 gets no outreach. Re-score it every week and promote any account that gains a new signal.
  • Each SDR owns 25 tier 1 accounts at a time, and swaps one out when it books or goes cold.

How do you use job posts to prioritize accounts?

  • Rank first the accounts hiring for a role your product helps or replaces.
  • Give extra weight to a first hire for a new team, which means tools are still being chosen.
  • Read the responsibilities: a post that names your problem in its own words beats a post that only names a title.
  • Drop the weight for posts that stay open all year or backfill one seat on a big team.

Why does evidence-based scoring beat firmographic data alone?

Firmographic data tells you which companies match your buyer. It does not tell you which of them has the problem this quarter.

Two companies with the same size and industry can be a year apart in their plans. A job post or a filing shows which one is moving now.

Which accounts do you skip?

Skipping is a decision, not a gap. Write down the reason, so the account comes back when the reason ends.

  • A recent renewal with a competitor, until the next renewal window.
  • A hiring freeze or layoffs in the team you sell to.
  • No hiring for the roles your product supports, and no other public sign of need.
  • The wrong stage: too small to have the problem, or too large for your sales motion.
  • A WARN notice, which gives advance notice of qualified plant closings and mass layoffs (US Department of Labor).

How do you know prioritization is working?

  • Reply rate and meetings per tier: tier 1 needs to beat tier 2 clearly.
  • The share of closed deals that started in tier 1.
  • How many skipped accounts came back with a new signal, and what happened next.

How Kalko ranks accounts

Kalko does this for every account in your market and keeps the source and date on each claim. It starts at $99 per month, with a 200-credit trial.

  1. Kalko reads public signals for the accounts in your market, such as job posts, filings and buyer posts.
  2. It writes a short case for each account, with the evidence and a check for reasons to skip it.
  3. It ranks accounts by need and proposes a few plays each week. A quiet week can have zero plays.
  4. You approve each play, and Kalko writes the approved values into your own sender. Only Autopilot, once you arm it, enrolls people on its own.

Questions people ask

What is the best way to prioritize accounts?

Score fit, need and timing separately, weight need and timing higher, and re-score every week.

How many target accounts can one SDR work?

It depends on deal size. A common start is 25 researched accounts at a time, swapped as they book or go cold.

What is the difference between account scoring and lead scoring?

Account scoring ranks companies. Lead scoring ranks individual people. Account scores add up signals across the whole company.
