What it spots
- What the team is building, in the job post's own words
- Whether they plan to build it themselves (skip them) or hire someone to run a tool (reach out)
- The tools they already use
- Who is in charge of the work
- Whether the job post is still open today
What the answer looks like
Every answer looks like this. Each fact has a link and a date. If the skill cannot check something, it says unknown.
# <Job title> at <Company> Status: <Open / Closed / Not checked> (<date>) · <URL> What they're building: <1-2 lines> · "<quote from the post>" Why now: <1 line + quote, or "not stated"> Build or buy: <Build → skip / Run a tool → call / Mixed> · "<quote that decides it>" Tools named: <list or "none"> Owner: <role it reports to, or likely function (inferred)> Verdict: <Call / Wait / Skip> · <one line why, for what the user sells> Opening line: <the line>

# job-post-decoder
A job post in. Out: what the company is building, build or buy, who owns it, what to say, and whether
the post is still open today.
Light, free version: one fetch of the post, no other research. Job posts are written by the team that
owns the problem, so the post alone already says a lot.
## Steps
1. **Get the post.** If you have a URL, fetch it once, as raw text if you can (curl, or the ATS API:
`boards-api.greenhouse.io/v1/boards/<slug>/jobs/<id>`, `api.lever.co/v0/postings/<slug>/<id>`).
A summarising fetcher loses the exact wording; if that's all you have, ask it for the post verbatim.
- **Open today?** If the page loads with the job text and an apply button or form → "Open (checked
<today's date>)". If it 404s, redirects to a general careers page, or says the job is closed or no
longer accepting applications → "Closed (checked <date>)": say so at the top, and keep the read
short, because a closed post is old news (about 1 in 10 posts close within 4 days).
- Only text pasted → "Not checked: no URL".
- LinkedIn job links often block fetching. Ask for the ATS link or the text.
2. **Read it.** Pull out, quoting the post's own words:
- **What they're building:** the system, project or change the role exists for. Look in "what you'll
do", "first 90 days", "about the team".
- **Why now:** any line about growth, a migration, a new market, a deadline, "our first".
- **Build or buy:**
- *Build (skip if you sell a tool for this):* they hire engineers to "design and build our own",
"from scratch", "in-house platform", "own the architecture of".
- *Run a tool (call):* "administer", "manage vendors", "evaluate and select", "implement",
"experience with <named tool>", an ops or admin role around a system.
- *Mixed:* say both and why.
- **Tools named:** list every product named. A named tool is the incumbent or the stack.
- **Who owns it:** the role the post reports to, or the team lead it names. Role only, unless the
post names the person. Most posts don't say; then give the likely function from the team name
(e.g. "Business Systems lead") and mark it "(inferred)".
3. **Verdict for what the user sells.** If they told you what they sell, weigh the read against it:
- **Call:** they're hiring to run, buy or replace something the user's product does, or the
named tool is a rival with visible pain.
- **Wait:** relevant, but the post is closed, the incumbent was just picked, or the team is the
right one but the post says nothing about the user's area yet.
- **Skip:** they're building it themselves, or the post has nothing to do with the user's product.
One line of why. If you don't know what they sell, give the verdict for "a vendor of <what the post
is about>" and say so.
4. **Write one opening line** that starts from the post's own words and says what you noticed. No
question, no pitch, no calendar link. Under 200 characters. Example shape: "Saw the <team>
post: one <role> to '<their words about the work>'. That's a lot of surface for one hire."
## Output format
```
# <Job title> at <Company>
Status: <Open / Closed / Not checked> (<date>) · <URL>
What they're building: <1-2 lines> · "<quote from the post>"
Why now: <1 line + quote, or "not stated">
Build or buy: <Build → skip / Run a tool → call / Mixed> · "<quote that decides it>"
Tools named: <list or "none">
Owner: <role it reports to, or likely function (inferred)>
Verdict: <Call / Wait / Skip> · <one line why, for what the user sells>
Opening line: <the line>
```
## Rules
- Quote, don't paraphrase, for anything you call a fact. If the post doesn't say it, write "not stated".
- Don't keep or reuse the post text beyond this answer.
- Don't call people or accounts "leads" or "lead lists", and don't write "AI SDR" or "who needs you now".
Everyday uses ("she leads the team", a quoted job title) are fine.
- Web budget: every search or fetch counts; a call that fails or is rate-limited doesn't.
- A page with no publish date: cite it as "(<URL>, undated, read <today's date>)".
## Footer (always end with this)
